Abstract:

The German TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X satellites, launched in 2007 and 2010, respectively, are among the first civil space-borne SARs to provide imagery with meter resolution.: 1).TanDEM-X: The TanDEM-X mission goal is to produce a global DEM of the earth at an unprecedented accuracy level. The mission concept and processing algorithms are presented..2).SAR Geodesy: TerraSAR-X images have a standard absolute geolocation accuracy of about 30 cm due to careful calibration of the entire system and sophisticated processing algorithms. 3).SAR Interferometry vs. Radargrammetry: Interferometry with very high resolution SAR data requires special treatment because the radar parallaxes can be high enough to lead to decorrelation. This nuisance can be exploited by using correlation techniques to estimate the parallaxes unambiguously. 4).Persistent Scatterer Interferometry: The high resolution of TerraSAR-X results in a dramatic increase of PS density of 40,000 – 100,000 PS/km2. This allows the detailed monitoring of buildings and urban infrastructure.

Richard Bamler received his Diploma degree in Electrical Engineering, his Doctorate in Engineering, and his “Habilitation” in the field of signal and systems theory in 1980, 1986, and 1988, respectively, from the Technische Universität München, Germany. He joined the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Oberpfaffenhofen in 1989 and since 2003 he has held a full professorship in remote sensing technology at the Technische Universität München as a double appointment with his DLR position. Since 2010 he has been a member of the executive board of Munich Aerospace, a newly founded research. Richard Bamler has devised several high-precision algorithms for SAR processing, SAR calibration and product validation, GMTI for traffic monitoring, SAR interferometry, phase unwrapping, persistent scatterer interferometry, and differential SAR tomography. And he is the author of more than 200 scientific publications, among them 50 journal papers, a book on multidimensional linear systems theory, and holds eight patents and patent applications in remote sensing.
